Planetfall - Prologue

"Attention all hands, insertion in twenty minutes, two-zero minutes from my mark. Mark!. Watch two suit up, then relieve watch one"

The off watch crew begin donning and assembling their suits while the on watch crew make final checks.

After six minutes they begin swapping places.

Another six minutes later all the crew are suited, helmets in place.

"Final checks before insertion"

"Sensors?"

"Sensors green!"

"Weapons?"

"Weapons green"

"Astrogation?"

"Astrogation green"

"Enginneering?"

"Engineering green"

"Payload?"

"Payload green"

"Beacon?"

The crewman at the launch station clears the cover from the emergency message torpedo launch button and replies "Beacon green"

"Insertion twenty seconds"

"Secure for insertion, insertion in three, two, one".

The ship seems to shudder as if waking.

"Sensors?"

"No detectable signals, definitely no active sensors"

"Astrogation, are we where we should be?"

"Wait one ma'm"

"Computer matches star position to expected configuration, sun and target planet in predicted locations"

"Okay launch survey packages"

There is the distinctive sound of the cold launch system firing the survey packages.

"Payloads away"

"Exit in twenty seconds"

"Exiting in three, two, one"

"Beacon, make safe"

The crew glance round the crowded bridge, another successful launch - the mission success dependent on the data retrieved but that was for another crew.

The ship's commander checks the manifest:

"Only another fourteen deployments and we can go home"
